Interview with Leslie and Brittany Houser
Kings Mountain, North Carolina—March 4, 2000

Brittany and Leslie Houser, and Tabatha Goforth at the Carolina County Jail where Richard and Mildred Loving were incarcerated in 1958.After months of research, in 1998 nine-year-old Brittany Houser located Mrs. Mildred Loving, codefendant in Loving v. Virginia.

Brittany and her mother Leslie talk about that first meeting.

EXERPTShe had a feeling it was Brittany when we pulled up in the driveway. She must have recognized her, because she could see out—she has a big picture window—I’m sure she could see out, and she probably said ‘That's Brittany,’ because Brittany had sent her pictures for her. So we just went in just like we had always known her. It was just like she was family from the very beginning, and her cousin Otis—he lives across the road from her—and of course he was there, and we all just sat and talked.”
